Even better than a usual fridge, high humidity and a constant temperature of about 10°C keep the products fresh even longer. The functional principle of the Elio was inspired by two traditional ways of cooling:
On the one hand by the badgir, as used in the oriental architecture, is a solar chimney utilizing thermal updrafts to inflate a room with cool air from beneath the earth’s surface. The air that is sucked up by this method through an underground channel has a permanent temperature of 14-16°C the whole year round regardless of outside temperature changes.

On the other hand by the pot-in-pot cooling system, which is used in several regions in northern Africa due to its simplicity and efficiency. Two ceramic pots, sand and water are necessary to build this cooler that may lower the temperature within the inner pot to 8°C.

A number of functional tests were necessary to examine the reasonableness of this project.
Due to the necessity to enable a functional air and water circulation the optimal shape for the model had to be elaborated.

For the final product only recyclable materials were chosen and special care was taken to ensure an easy to dismantle way of construction. The surface is made up of aluminium and glas while hemp fibre and cork were chosen as insulating and sealing materials.
