Earthquake Research Center

Levent is a predominantly high rise and congested area in the heart of Istanbul, and the project site being an empty land that provides natural ventilation around the area. Building a high rise structure would hinder the natural flow of air which is why the new Earthquake research Center was design to be relatively low to the surrounding buildings. With Gardens and plazas to create a serene environment not just for people visiting the center, but also for passersby and users of the two top class restaurants meant to generate funds for earthquake research and related natural disasters.

The form of the structure is inspired by the manner in which natural forces of water wind and solar radiation shape the earth. This is visible and as well felt both from the exterior and interior part of the structure. The distinction between walls, floors and roofing has been eliminated and individual spaces feel like a transition between one bubble space to another, with ramps to enable even the disabled access all major areas of the research center. Daylight use in all required areas has been utilized properly by the mode of large glass panes dispersed all over the building form. An access from the Levent metro station was easily possible given the close proximity of building to the station.
The memorial hall is the first exhibition space approached when one enters the building. The names of those who lost their lives in the 1999 earthquake are written on the wooden envelope of the memorial hall. There is also a temporary exhibition hall in the underground floor with two meeting rooms for research breakthrough showcasing to the general public.

In the education center, there are research labs, a simulation room, a seismic lab, class rooms and a library for research and educational purposes to visitors.

There is also shelter incase of natural disasters and a parking lot in the basement floor.

Overall, the research center can be divided into three parts. The exhibition area, the research area and the dining area, all of which contribute greatly to provide a complete experience. In conclusion, with the recent advances and breakthroughs in architecture and design, there is need for new structures to reflect these breakthroughs among which is the ability to design a form which is not only visually appealing but also provides an astonishing experience to its inhabitants.
