Invited by curator Isabel Portella to exhibit at Intervenções Urbanas Art Rio ‘16 in the stunning gardens of the Museu da República, Rio de Janeiro, Penique created Gruta.
We were delighted to be one of only fifteen artists exhibiting sculpture and installation at Art Rio, the most prestigious art fair of the city and the second largest in Brazil.
Gruta was the transformation of a garden grotto – its cavernous, stonewalled space defined by a striking pink, the inflatables bulbous extremities protruding from every possible exit point.
Viewed from distance, the natural elements of the park, ironically man-made themselves, juxtaposed with the inflatable, a violent bubblegum pink when exposed in the sunlight.
Once inside the inflatable, colour and texture was transformed by ambient lighting, giving a mysterious warm glow. The wrinkled walls, the inflatable’s personality, echoed the curvature of the grotto – their formation relative to the air pressure inside.
The transformed grotto – its irregular structure and organic environment – resembled the internal organs of a living body.
La comisaria Isabel Portela invita al Colectivo a participar de la exposición Intervenções Urbanas Art Rio 2016 que se llevó a cabo en los jardines del Museu da República, Rio de Janeiro. Junto a las obras de otros 14 artistas, el Parque queda ocupado del día 27 de Septiembre al 2 de Octubre de 2016 y, para la ocasión, Penique productions escoge realizar la instalación en la gruta del mencionado jardín. Un hinchable rosa ocupa por completo la gruta de la que, por las aberturas, se asoma en forma de grandes esferas de un rosa chicle que se relacionan con las erosionadas “rocas” grises. Desde fuera, se entiende el conjunto lago, piedras, globo y vegetación como una pieza escultórica única. Por dentro, accediendo a través de una misteriosa abertura, un tanto sofocante, por la que solo pasa una persona de cada vez y por la que no se puede ver nada hasta que se descubre el interior de la pieza, se penetra al corazón del hinchable que convierte el oscuro interior de la gruta en un espacio completamente rosa iluminado por 50 bombillas de un blanco cálido. La luz, el color y los arrugados pliegues se relacionan, a través de la presión del aire, con las lineas irregulares de la gruta generando un entorno orgánico que remite al interior de un cuerpo vivo.
