Langstone Harbour Nature Reserve Poster

Brief: Design an informative and positive poster celebrating Langstone Harbours unique and internationally important wildlife habitat.
Role: Research and carry out an ethnographic study of users of Langstone Harbours wildlife sanctuaries. Design a poster to inform or educate the public.

Through research, I found that there was a problem from unintentional disturbance to nesting seabirds by visitors and dog walkers, which leads to stress, to seabird colonies and adult birds abandoning their nests and young.

The effect of disturbance is that the adult birds use valuable energy and time defending their nests, instead of foraging for food. The adult birds are burning precious calories affecting their health and condition, and the chicks do not get enough food to survive times of inclement weather or shortages of food.

Through the ethnographic study of visitors to the sites, I identified that the majority of visitors did not know how to recognise the behaviour of the nesting birds when they got too close.

This research informed my design as educational poster, how to identify nesting seabirds in distress and educate the public on how to avoid further disturbance.
