Is it possible to design typography
bearing language in mind?
I believe that great design projects begin when you ask yourself the right questions. For my final undergrad project, I set out to discover if I could design a text face inspired on the visual features of written Spanish.
Different languages —among those written with latin script— have different textures; Spanish happens to be quite monotonous: it is rounder, lighter and has less vertical axis alterations than other languages.
Granada consists (so far) of a regular weight, roman, lowercase alphabet. Its angular details and irregular counters intend to diversify the shapes and therefore the rhythm of long texts written in Spanish for enhanced legibility. Apart from text sizes on print, Granada can be used in display sizes for applications in headers for different editorial media or branding.
