Barrio Metalico is a small community of freestanding homes set within the work/live neighborhood of Millville, southeast of downtown Tucson. Initially a speculative project to enhance the neighborhood the Metalico homes quickly took on their own personality. The development was split across two different sites across a larger block. An existing adobe wall from previous worker housing has been incorporated into perimeter site walls composed with distressed wood and corrugated metal salvaged from a demolished building on a neighboring site.
Embracing the mixed industrial environment, the siding of each unit is corrugated metal with a galvalume finish. Each unit provides flexible loft style living, and quality views of the regions mountains. Rainwater harvesting with metal culvert tanks and super-insulated wall systems round out this award winning modern infill village.
I was involved in the Design Development of the project.
