The Written Word — Reading Experience On Screen
The Written Word: Reading Experience On Screen was developed in 2016, while I was finishing my Master's Degree in Editorial Design.
This project aims to analyse the current state of reading practices on screen, both from the designer’s and the reader’s point of view. This thesis shows its relevance in a world increasingly interested in providing content in digital format, that was originally created for conventional books or printed publications. For this transition to be successful and to create space for new types of genres specific of this new medium, there are several questions that require analysis and study.
We have divided these questions into two main chapters. Firstly, we reflect on the morphology of the text and reading, trying to analyze the changes in the relationship and interaction of the reader with the text, as well as understand the changes in the content. Secondly, we analyze which changes occur in the design practice for the screen, from the most technical subjects related to hardware and software, until layout and typographic behavior. At last, and through all the acquired knowledge, we created a website where all the content developed during the research is available.
