LA Lakers' 16 NBA Championships

Chris Pliha serves as regional vice president of sales with technology company Hixme. In this position, he oversees recruiting, employee retention, and sales team expansion. Away from work, Chris Pliha enjoys following Los Angeles Lakers basketball.

The Los Angeles Lakers have won 16 National Basketball Association (NBA) championships, second only to the Boston Celtics’ 17 championship banners. The Lakers franchise originated in Minneapolis, where the team won back-to-back championships during its first two seasons between 1948 and 1950, and five titles overall.

The Lakers spent 12 seasons in Minnesota before relocating to California. Following the move, the Lakers reached the NBA Finals seven times before finally winning a sixth championship in 1972, nearly two decades after the team’s previous title. Between 1981 and 1988 the Lakers added five championships, including two victories over the rival Celtics.

Entering the millennium with 11 championships to Boston’s 16, Los Angeles quickly closed the gap by stringing together three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002. In 2008, the Lakers reached the NBA Finals for the fifth time in nine seasons, but fell to Boston in six games. However, Los Angeles recovered to win consecutive championships in 2009 and 2010 – the franchise's 15th and 16th titles.
