Battle for the Arts
‘Battle for the Arts’ depicts an exploration into how the art has contributed towards or hindered moments of creating empowering spatial and hence social relationships in public. The Northern Academy of Arts, Newcastle upon Tyne, was subject of a battle between individual gain and public vitality. A period lasting near 200 years saw moments of restrictive class segregation, yet The Grand Bazaar created moments of art as public involvement and the battle was won. Today the Academy has turned full circle, as privatisation benefits the elite, leading to a provocation establishing a counter-cycle through an infiltration of the city.
