Millennials Die Too. (Student Work)

Publication Design and Editorial
Art Director: Kelly Raath
Copywriter: Kelly-Anne Ellis

Brief
Stare death in the face and find out everything there is to know about it. Create a publication that ‘visits death’ – a work that will inform and stimulate the intellect whilst pleasing the typographic designer’s eye.

Insight
Millenials think that they are invincible until they are left alone with their thoughts.

Concept
Design a book that captures the insight by combining a collection of quotes and intimate photographs reflecting the unheard fears and thoughts of millennials regarding death.

Book
Using an amalgamation of papers, textures and colours to provide the reader with an unsettling experience. Quotes collected from students and inspired by personal understanding are scattered throughout. Jarring photographs mixed with an alarming colour scheme bring to life the anxiety and worry felt when contemplating death.
We think that we are invincible.
We think that the Grim Reaper will never come knocking at our door or that the bucket will never be kicked by our Nike Airs.
We captioned the phrase ‘YOLO’, embraced it and tattooed it across our chests. But, did we actually take into consideration what it really means?
We push the limits, go beyond the limits and create our own limits. Priding ourselves on being the risk-taking generation, with adrenaline, caffeine and stubbornness pumping through our veins.
Everything we do is to the extreme. With a rash mentality and an air of madness we don’t have one drink when we can have the bottle.
Our parents told us the world was ours and that instilled an unmoving sense of bravery within us. A bravery that blinds us from seeing that petrol light when it begins to blink.
We are too young, too full of life and oozing with a cologne of confidence that we will never meet our maker. For we are the ones who will dance on the graves and scatter the soil.
The pop anthems that we belt out become reassuring chants that we will be forever young.
Maybe, one day we will fully realize that life is a short trip, but then we will make it the widest and craziest one possible.

Midnight murmurs of millennials
As self-assured as we come across, when the night is still and at its darkest, an overwhelming wave of doubt and fear washes over us. It is in that moment, that space in time that death crosses our mind and refuses to leave.
