1984 Project- Emigre

The brief for this project was to create a piece of design showing an important event in a year assigned to us. My year was 1984 and the event I chose to communicate was the launch of Emigre magazine, a design magazine showcasing the most current and unconventional design trends.

After much research and investigation, I settled on a few themes which I felt summed up the magazine and should be included in the final piece. These were: layering, unconventional design, forward thinking, and the ability to shape your own experiance.

One I felt was particulally important to the format of my final piece, this was the ability to shape your own experiance with design and Emigre itself. In oreder to find a format to allow this, I looked into books and formats that allowed the user to move parts around at will- this eventually lead me to look into flip-books as a potential format.

All this meant my final piece of graphic communication was a flip-book with four A4 pages displaying the number 1984 with each page diplaying a differnt important part of the content of Emigre: Typeography, Emigres origins, Forward thinking and Still image. I then created different designs to go on the back of these in the style of the content pages, mirroring an actual magazine. I bound all these into a book and then cut it so that the user could swap out parts of the pages with others to create their own front cover design.
