Making a designer toy
William - Frank Kozik/Arts Unknown
In my second year of university i had the opportunity to explore one area of modelmaking that i was very passionate about - designer toys.

I looked at how the process of making a designer toy works and put my research into practice by making a copy of this design by the legendary Frank Kozik.
I would like to take this oppportunity to thank Arts unknown for allowing me to show this work in my portfolio and to point out the copyright for this work is exclusively held by Arts Unknown and Frank Kozik.

I started the process by making a very quick sketch model from the technical drawings above.
In an attempt to replicate a professional working practice I then sculpted each individual part of the model as seen on the  technical sheet so that i could mold and cast them.
After sculpting all of the individual parts i prepared them so that i could make some silicone molds.
After demolding the original sculptures i cast resin versions of each part.
These resin casts were then primed and sanded.
Next, I sprayed the model using acrylic paints and an airbrush. Then assembled the model ready to be marked. There is a lot more work i would have liked to do to this piece. But overall i was really happy with the results and more importanly i learnt a great deal about the process of making a toy. I look forward to working in this medium again in the future and maybe with some of my own designs.
The official version of this toy which is incredible is hopefully going to be available for purchase from arts unknown later this year. Make sure you check out their website and support this excellent company.
