SHAPEGUARD / Miami Rescue Towers

In August 1992, hurricane Andrew, one of the most destructive hurricane in United States history, hit south of Florida causing major damage, in particular along the shore. After that, the architect William Lane gave to Miami 29 of the 31 lifeguard rescue towers, ones of a kind, built on the beach from South Point to 87th street. The last two were built in occasion of Miami Beach century in 2015.

These towers are characterized by unique shades that interchange pastel paint with intense dye and by an eccentric architecture that differentiate one from the others. For this reason, these rescue towers had become icons of the city and the territory.

These amazing subjects inspired me and I shoot the new series “SHAPEGUARD”, emulating the style of previous project. Also in this case, the photos of the colourful seaside building seen by a detached perspective, become minimal architectures. I choose the name “shape-guard” to create assonance with “life-guard beach towers”.

When I shoot for my projects, I image a white sheet where I draw shades and colours using my camera. Shades are the way to explore the space, releasing from their real image, to make it more emotional and aiming to decontextualize buildings from the space around. In this way the photos represent a "no place" escaped from the usual context. The towers in my project, as well as in real, are named following the numbers of the streets where they are locate in Miami Beach.

Nell’agosto del ’92 l’uragano Andrew – il secondo uragano più distruttivo della storia degli Stati Uniti – colpì la Florida meridionale provocando ingenti danni, in particolare sulla costa. In seguito, l’architetto William Lane donò alla città di Miami 29 delle 31 torrette di salvataggio, uniche nel loro genere, lungo la spiaggia che da South Point arriva alla 87th strada. Le ultime due vennero aggiunte nel 2015 in occasione del centenario di Miami Beach.

Caratterizzate da forme originali che alternano sfumature pastello a tinte vivaci e da un’architettura che le differenzia tra di loro, le torrette sono diventate vere e proprie icone visive.

Ispirato da questi affascinanti soggetti nasce la serie “SHAPEGUARD” riprendendo il linguaggio sviluppato in altri precedenti progetti; anche in questo caso gli scatti delle variopinte architetture balneari assumono una fisionomia astratta per trasformarsi in vere e proprie composizioni geometriche minimali. Il nome shape-guard (guardiano delle forme), è stato scelto per assonanza con il termine “life-guard beach towers”, le postazioni di soccorso dei bagnini.

Quando scatto immagino un foglio bianco su cui disegnare forme e colori utilizzando la macchina fotografica e le forme diventano un pretesto che mi consente l’esplorazione emotiva e personale degli spazi, svincolati dalla loro immagine reale, con l’intenzione di decontestualizzare le architetture dall’habitat circostante. In tal senso gli scatti rappresentano un “non-luogo”, dematerializzato dalla sua stessa fisicità.

Le torrette ritratte nel mio lavoro, così come nella realtà, sono denominate seguendo la numerazione della loro ubicazione stradale in Miami.
