For this project, we were required to design a tea light candle holder, the design had to relate to the process of casting. The casting had to be done using a one part mold.
The design had to be aimed at the domestic environment and had to be inspired by either the 50's, 60's or 70's furniture design.
I decided to use the 60's as my inspiration.
After doing basic research I started drawing.
After finding the basic shape, I started exploring different designs.
Next I made my first mock-up, too see how the shape will look in real life.
With the second Mock-up, I decided to hide the aluminium part of the tea light candle by adding a second material and lowering the hole in which the candle will come.
With the final Mock-up, I turned the bottom piece to make the parts more interesting
After the mock-ups I made a final refined page.
Because my mock-ups was made with wood, I also used it as my pattern, I sanded the piece down and sealed it with sanding sealer.
Next, I started making the mold. I used an existing container that is round to save material. I used silicone for the mold.
After the mold was ready, I started the castings. I first measured the resin then I added the pigment and after that, I added the hardener.

Making of the wooden base. I first drilled a hole as a guide for the bench drill, then I drilled the circular hole where the tea light will fit into, next I marked where to cut the wood, and then I proceeded to cut it out with a band saw
Materials used.
Last I glued the wood base and the casting piece together using double sided tape.
Final product
This product was inspired by the 60's love for geometric forms.
