‘Establishing an Egalitarian Tea Territory’

Critiquing Yorkshire tea’s realm of egalitarianism, assessing what ‘territory’ might mean within a context based upon equality. Yorkshire tea is considered to be one of the world’s most egalitarian types of tea – yet the exclusive 16% asserts that an underlying exclusivity makes the tea inherently hierarchical in a pot-latch society. 

Yorkshire tea have poured £5 million into marketing in order to compete with the vast choice of herbal teas.The biggest market is youthful tea drinkers where 84% drink less than 5 cups of tea a day. However the tradition and expectations to perform the ceremony correctly could be an obstacle, as teas such as green tea require a small amount of preparation and therefore less preference of a ritual. 

This invitation, invites the 84% to become a part of the exclusive pot-latch society, by establishing the moments of celebration and participation and the moments of exclusion and personal preference, by establishing these areas Betty and Taylor can begin to curate a ceremony inclusive of everyone.

The last planned open green space in the city is home to a vast range of the urban populous and frequented by youth subcutural groups including goths and emo’s, other visitors include security, police, shoppers, families, freshers and uber taxi’s. With a diverse set of characters is the enviroment open to an egalitarian ceremony?
The Old Eldon Square Peep Show 
A method of transportation - a desire for immersion in other worlds. 

The Old Eldon Square peep show explores a series of juxtapositions imposed on the square at various stages of its life, from the year 1945 to 2200.  Different themes are explored in order to document, historical and contemporary scenario’s establishing a series of foriegn or imaginary locales, simillarly to traditional peep shows which aimed to transport the viewer to a different time and experience times and places beyond their own experiences.

The accordion peep show transports the users of Old Eldon Square to four different scenario’s, each one based on the squares four sides, the explorations suggest past and future threats in order to capture the moments of juxtapositions entering the realms of possibility.
