Final Project: Art Foundation- Bristol School of Art
For my final Foundation project at Bristol School of Art, I decided to take on a task with a bit more relevance to my next step - Undergraduate studies (Product Design at Bournemouth University). Vertical Desk is a concept for an organising system of modular components that solve the problem of organising work space where there are many small things that need to be stored- like an office, studio, kitchen, shed, bathroom. Pretty much anywhere!
Vertical Desk consists of a range of components. All components are made from mild steel, powder coated matt white. The components consist of tiles (200 x 300mm) which attach to most interior walls with 3M Dual Lock (similar to velcro but stronger). By using Dual Lock, tiles are quick to put in place and easy to remove and reposition. When tiles are in the desired position, a range of containers and shelves can be placed on the tiles. All containers/ shelves come with strong neodymium magnets attached, which provide a secure fixing against the tiles. These magnets are suitable for most storage applications, but if the user would like to store heavy objects (large books, laptops etc) then adjustable polyester cords are included, providing an additional secure fixing.
This project was taken from initial ideas through to final production, complete with graphic work and packaging concept in 8 weeks. While it's a long way from market-ready, I think there's huge potential for this concept.

I love modular systems, with their limitless potential to be whatever you want them to be. I suppose it's a tribute to the toys I used to play with as I grew up - Lego, K'NEX, Mecano, Scalextric. I even brought my dad's old Bayko set down from the attic once. Take one individual component, and you've got something utterly mundane. Take a box full of them, and you have something much more exciting - Possibilities!

The joy of customisation and modifying something things is something i'm still hooked on. These days my toys are bigger and more expensive- like old VW vans and mountain bikes, but they still satisfy the same urge that started with my first Lego set.
