Building and Construction Authority - In Convenience

BCA Universal Design Short Film Competition 2014

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) launched the InclUDed Movement in 2013, a nation-wide initiative to promote Universal Design in Singapore’s built environment. In its broadest term, Universal Design (UD) refers to "design for everyone". For the built environment, it focuses on creating an inclusive society, where the young, the elderly, and persons with limited mobility can continue to enjoy living in familiar surroundings with their loved ones. UD is gaining interest in Singapore in light of our ageing society. And as our population increases, there will be more different groups, each with its own interests and concerns. A “friendly” built environment that is barrier free and seamlessly connected will enable people of varying degrees of mobility to move around with ease. This in turn allows them to lead active and independent lives, and build essential bonds with family, friends and the wider community.

As part of the InclUDed Movement, BCA also rolled out “Unify to UDify”, a social campaign aimed at generating greater ground-up demand for UD, thereby influencing industry stakeholders to incorporate more UD features in their developments. The campaign included activities that helped showcase the importance and benefits of UD in the built environment such as exhibitions, a UD Parade, competitions and ambient communications placed at strategic locations to reinforce the message.

In Convenience is a film that illustrates the application of Universal Design in our ordinary lifestyles that brings about ease as compared to before, which we may overlook at times.

It was awarded the 4th prize in the BCA UD Short Films Competition 2014.
