A floating knife concept named Morakniv Coastal with a novel sheath created for the Norwegian fishing industry. This in collaboration with Morakniv AB as my bachelor thesis.

In the beginning of the process we used surveys, interviews and observations on sight to get a complete understanding about the problem; knives is sinking down inside the fish farms, risking to make damage to the net and allow 200.000 salmon to escape which brings an environmental disaster and huge fines. This kind of hands on understanding is so important that we flew to Norway to understand the problem on sight.

The user study provided valuable insights creating a list of requirements. Some initial sketching led up to a few concepts, all verified to work.

The "Air" concept which brings the blade to the back of the handle and allows for an air pocket inside was developed into the concept Morakniv Coastal, which was developed together with a new sheath which allows the user to access the knife straight out from the body reducing common stabbing injuries in the thigh.

The air pocket inside allows the knife to float and the blade have been designed to suit the needs of the fishermen working on the platforms.

This project gave me the experience of using all I have learned in my education in one project. Thorough user studies, idea generation and concept development lead to this result. Out of this we managed to use the engineering skills in combination with design skills to achieve a viable solution meeting the requirements of the user.
