Ao refletir sobre a importância dos metais para nós como espécie, percebi que foi somente através deles – como o bronze ou o aço – que a humanidade se viu diante de si pela primeira vez. (Sim, nós de fato conseguíamos ver nosso reflexo na água ou no vidro, mas nada que se comparasse a um espelho.)
Upon reflecting on the importance of metal to us as a species, I realized that it was only through metal – such as bronze or steel – that humankind saw itself in detail for the first time. (Yes, we were indeed able to see our reflection on water and glass, but nothing close to a mirror.)
Mas não nos trouxe só alegria. Acabamos nos tornando obcecados com a impressão que os outros teriam de nós.
And it brought us not only joy. We became obsessed with the impression others would have about ourselves.
Desde então, o Medo usa nossa Vaidade para nos manter eternamente insatisfeitos com a nossa aparência, e censurando o nosso comportamento.
Since then, Fear uses our Vanity to make us forever unsatisfied with our appearance and censor our own behavior.
É difícil escapar do olhar hipnotizante com o qual o Medo nos provoca. Somos atraídos por cada distorção de nossa imagem e eventualmente acabamos petrificados por nossa própria auto-estima.
It's hard to escape the mesmerizing gaze with which Fear tempts us. We are attracted to each distortion of our own image and eventually become petrified by our self-esteem.
Após um tempo, começamos a aceitar e assumir quem realmente somos.
After a while, we can start accepting and truly owning who we are.
No final das contas, tudo se resume a superar ou sucumbir à Vaidade.
It all comes to either overcoming or succumbing to Vanity.
A escultura é inteiramente feita de chapas de aço inox unidas com adesivo estrutural – sem soldas. Todas as chapas foram cortadas com jato d’água e a espelhada foi entortada à mão e também recebeu a gravação com o título, data e assinatura. Tem 2 metros de altura e pesa em torno de 380kg.
The sculpture's entirely made of stainless steel sheets bonded with structural adhesive - nothing was soldered. All sheets were water jet cut and the mirrored one was hand-bent an also etched with the title, date and signature. It's 2 m tall (~6'7") and weighs about 380 kg (~838 lbs).
Atualmente se encontra no museu particular do colecionador que a encomendou.
It currently sits at the private gallery of the collector who commissioned it.
*The reason it is spelled with an "o" is because, in Portuguese, Medousa (as opposed to Medusa) can also be read as FearUses.
Em outubro de 2015, a escultura apareceu no canal GNT, num episódio do programa “Casa Brasileira” – que apresenta construções diversas da arquitetura nacional – como parte de um especial focado no trabalho do arquiteto que projetou a casa do colecionador.
On October, 2015, it appeared on Brazilian cable network GNT's show "Casa Brasileira" – which presents great achievements in Brazilian architecture – as part of a special edition focused on the architect who designed the collector's house.
