Monochromatic Samulnori

H/HB Graphite Pencil

Samulnori is one of Korea’s most celebrated cultural treasures - a traditional form of entertainment which incorporates the four (‘samul’) percussion instruments: Kkwaenggari (a small gong), Jing (a larger gong), Janggu (an hourglass drum), and Buk (a barrel drum), along with the lavish and flamboyant movements of its performers dressed in traditional attire and ribbon hats called ‘Samong’. This piece embodies the physical artistic element of the sound produced from this play. The lone performer’s conventional role is to arouse enthusiasm but when alone he emits the most fluid, solemn sound instead and thus is presented without the original vibrant colors of Korean culture.
