For my last assignment during my first year at University, I was given the choice of 20 professional briefs, from which I could choice one and then do my best to answer it. After narrowing down my choices, I decided upon  the Little White Lies brief, it both included elements that had appeal to me, along with offering a challenge as I was to make something that was unique but would fit in with the covers that came before it. Much emphasis was put on me not limiting myself to the standard and answering the brief in a creative way that shows my individuality along with my imagination.

Research Scans of my Sketchbook

For my it wasn’t just about researching previous covers andother styles, I wanted to go much further than that for this assignment. Iwanted to demonstrate a complete understanding of portraiture; I wanted tochallenge the dominant ideology of what is a portrait and to show an in-depthanalysis of my subject. I was alsotasked to create a case study, which includes some of my thoughts and feelingson the matter.

Development Scans of Sketchbook
Having chosen my film and fully understood the character Iwas portraying I set out to develop my ideas into sketches, I had wanted to usean iconic scene that many would recognise but not give too much of the movieaway. I used simple lines to build up the character body, this style seemeddifferent to ones that came before itbut still would link with previous covers.

After quickly sketching out a few ideas and altering them tomy preferred liking, I then begun to select which one I felt was best for thecover and proceeded to develop that one more. I tried out subtle changes allthe time trying to remain true to the character without it looking like it had beendone before
Cover to exact Size and Resolution
This is the final cover featuring the character “GeorgeSmiley” from “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”, one of the five films I couldchoice from.

My idea behind this piece was to bring to focus his definingcharacteristic, in this case, his ability to mask his emotions as well as hisrole of being a spy. I felt that him being faceless would represent his skillsas a spy along with showing no signs of features to give away his feelings. This was also to show a spy’s ability to blend into their surroundings, in myfinal cover his face literally blends into the background.

The glasses are the only element of his face that I kept inthe final product, this was because they served two roles. One was their icon statusand link with the main character, the two just naturally go well together andpeople can easily identify him with the glasses. Two was the intimidatingpresence he had just the movies; I wanted to retain that feel without usingfacial features. The glasses give an emotionless glance which empathises strengthof character without revealing anything about the character.
