Masked: The Roles We Play
Masked is a series of project about investigating things that are hidden within ourselves or the society. There are things that we do not portray ourselves to be as how we are on the outside. We often cover up a certain part of ourselves through various mediums and forms just to fit into our society. The first part of this project consists of 4 posters illustrating how we humans are similar to animals, wearing different mask for survival. It was then further developed in the second part to question the viewer about the mask we wear, the personality stereotype based on the chinese zodiac horoscope.
Part 1: Our Masked Selves
Animals tend to present themselves in a certain way for survival. Similarly, we have different selves in our daily scenerios. One may seem to know these animals from their appearance but might not know an alternate twist in their personality. Hence, not be fooled by one’s presented self, it may all just be a mask for survival.
Part 2: Zodiac Portraits of Us
‘Zodiac Portraits of Us‘ is a series of illustrations depicting different traits and personality of common roles within our society in the form of chinese zodiac animals. The Chinese Zodiac system, believed by most chinese, gives a holistic view of who we are born to be as well as who we can become based on our own choice. By anthropomorphizing the zodiac animals, it reflects how roles in our society require one to have a certain type of personality trait. It also reflects how we perceive others through their personality traits in contrast to these animals. However, are our roles who we really are?
