生肖 Born Resembling

The twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac are each said to be indicative of a person’s personality. The year a person is born correlates with one of the animals, and in theory, those traits are reflected in the person. Are you as industrious as the ox? Energetic like the horse? I sought out to personify these animals and their dominating attributes according to the Chinese calendar. You will find each portrait accompanied with the literal features of the animal as well as their lucky flower. Chinese culture associates the color red with good fortune and happiness. Its use is prevalent in festivals and various cultural celebrations, and is why I have chosen to feature it in this series.

My hope is that I have created images which people can identify with. So which are you?

This work was printed on 8x12 sheets of metal. The pieces floated about an inch off the gallery wall and were arranged in a grid that corresponded with the chronological order of the Zodiac as shown below.
