Becket Well Masterplan

Becket Well Masterplan
A detailed masterplan and urban regeneration proposal to re-develop and re-brand a key area of Derby, presented to Derby City Council for consideration.
Brief:

The Becket Well site presents the opportunity to become part of the existing vibrant entertainment / retail realm within the heart of the city and can promote alternative links to other areas within the city. The site must generate an interest to transform the site from a backwater area into the mainstream public realm and circulation area of the city. As a predominant site, close to the city centre, there is an aspiration to set new standards of design at Becket Well. The design of buildings and public spaces will draw on the opportunity presented by the location and the quality of building will be driven by existing and new standards aspired to nationally under BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes initiatives.

Designers Response:

The vision is to open up Becket Well to the rest of the city, re-establishing and re-branding the area as a vibrant and exciting core destination centred around the local community; a flagship sustainable development for St Peters Quarter with a key focus on celebrating the city’s heritage and historic industrial achievements.
Final Masterplan Proposal
[Blue line work signifies existing figures]
The Masterplan is based on a ‘radial ‘A'-shape parti and features three large south-east facing figures which create a direct pedestrian access point that links two main streets together. The scheme also comprises high quality interactive public realm space including a recreation and public performance space and an assortment of secret and peaceful patches of landscaped green space and urban water sculptures.

Throughout the area the subtle mixture of new and old architectural styles and motifs reflect the historic character and charm of the existing city surroundings while breathing new life with a balance of modernism.
