PHONOGRAM - Interactive Music Practicing Device

PHONOGRAM is an Interactive Music Practicing Device that could help young people who have to work but have interests to learn a musical instrument by themselves in their spare time.
After all the secondary research, I summaries a flow of self learners’ learning journey
From I want to learn to I reach my goal, there are 6 stages and every stage has different learning activities
Also, between every stage, learners may dropout because of different reasons
There are some findings from primary research

For interviews, I find that:
- It’s much easier to give up halfway when learner learning alone than learning with others
- When self-learner don’t have learning feedback, they wound like to dropout
- Motivation plays a key role in self-learning progress

For competitor analysis, I find that:
- There are no design solutions directly design for self-learning
- They are all phone based
- All the reminder are messages or alarms
Concept
- Two learners can connect through two devices.
- Learners set a practice plan together.
- When Learner A starts playing, the Phonogram will start to spin and draw the pattern.
- The melody that Learner A plays will be sent to the Phonogram of Learner B.
- Learner A and Learner B can practice together through devices.
- After practice, learners can get a pattern to measure the learning progress
First version of prototype
I use skype to create a behavior prototype that two learners play guitar in different places and they could listening to each other
They like this way but one thing they care about is privacy
Second version of prototype
I use laser cut,3D printing, paper and plastic bottle to make my prototype, and use Arduino to coding with motors and sensors
The disk can spin and I add a pencil to draw the pattern
After second time of user test
I got some feedback like if it’s could be smaller
It could have different kinds of pattern
And sensors on the guitar could be smaller
But this kind of problem are about technical so I can’t handle it now
But I change something like the speaker part, I try many times to figure out the perfect size and height
And I got the final prototype in the right side
PHONOGRAM has four part:
- The guitar has sensors to detect finger motion when the learner is practicing
-  Learners can hear each other’s music when they are practising
- The color of the light will change when the learner plays different music
- The pattern represents the time spent practising the guitar during the current month
