Cameras Come To Crotched Mountain
An important element of this project was the process of making cameras accessible to people with disabilities. In all, eleven cameras were adapted to accommodate varying abilities and needs.
Cameras were mounted to wheelchairs in a variety of angles and positions. Shutters were custom fitted with switches and plungers. Whatever it took for photographers to independently choose, compose and snap a picture, staff made sure it happened. “Photography is the most accessible artistic medium for people with disabilities. No matter what your motor skills are, if you can see through a viewfinder and activate a switch, you can transform what you see in your mind’s eye into a work of art,” says David Kontak, an occupational therapist who worked on the project.
