Earth Construction & Passive Solar Design

PROJECT BRIEF

Making individual hostel units for the Ladakh Univer-city.
These are modular units and this sample unit will be replicated in entire Module 1. In the process learn earth construction techniques, and passive solar design elements.
CONSTRUCTION:
Stage 1: Set Out, Excavate
Materials: Huge Boulders+ Stones+Sand
Stage 2: Foundation
Materials: Stone + Clay Slurry(binder)
Stage 3: Plinth
Materials: Clay Slurry+ Stones and Pebbles
Process: Plinth filling and Levelling
Stage 4: Side walls
Technique: Rammed Earth
Stage 5: Front wall
Technique: Adobe
Stage 6: Another side wall
Technique: Straw clay blocks
Stage 7: Installing shuttering for the roof
Sandpipes added so that shuttering can be removed easily once roof is strong.
Stage 8: Roof
Technique: Straw Clay and Flat earth roofing
Mixing batches of Strawclay
Making edges strong, and levelling the roof throughout.
Flat Earth Roofing, Earth is compacted(through ramming) to ensure waterproofing. Here we eliminated the use of tools, and used human mass for ramming ;)
Stage 9: Internal flooring
Stage 10: Mud Plaster on all walls
TEA BREAKS ;)
