JAGUAR LAND ROVER - ALIEN PROJECT BRIEF:
The Alien project was completed during a 6 month internship at Jaguar Land Rover, It was inspired
by concept art released for a fictional upcoming Alien movie. Our goal was to design, realise and
animate a Jaguar Land Rover space shuttle into the mood of this universe. This undergraduate project
was a good opportunity to show our creative skills in a coherent working group.

Design, Model, Render and Animate a Armored Personnel Carrier (APC).
The vehicle is a non-combat vehicle and will be used to transport five scientists to an
unknown planet from the ‘mother’ space craft for reconnaissance purposes.

The vehicle should have the ability to leave the mother ship out of orbit of the planet, land safely and deliver the terrain vehicles with ease.

RE-COMMISSIONED
Previously a high performance Ambassador luxury aircraft – the CXJ was purchased by IDO. and converted for scientific space exploratory purposes. The CXJ's first scientific mission: to Observe and Monitor any weaknesses of the Xenomorphs,
to get a leading edge over Weyland-Yutani Corp.

MISSION:
Find and Test any biological weaknesses of the Aliens - Requirering Crew to capture a Xenomorph.
Having a real-life link with Castle Bromwich factory - as a former Spitfire aircraft factory, enables Jaguar to contribute to IDO as an Independent Brand, and thus gave us the Opportunity to experiment a Jaguar DNA on a Space Shuttle Design.
PROMETHEUS:  PROJECT START-POINT
After receiveng intel that Weyland Corp. and the Engineers have a link to the Origin of the Xenomorphs, the CXJ-18 was sent on a 5-year mission to locate the Origin of the Aliens and the Engineers.

CREW / SHIP DIMMENSIONS:
5 personnel – 6 including designated onboard artificial intelligence.
Length: 80000 mm        Width: 45600 mm        Height: 9120 mm
SUITABLE FOR THE INSTALLATION OF A MOBILE INTERSTELLAR LABORATORY.
JAGUAR DNA
The Jaguar DNA is instantly recognisable – there is an unmistakable Tension and Purity of line that runs through all vehicles. Agile and powerful; sleek and seductive; confident and distinctive: all these qualities are reflected in Jaguar Designs.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
The Sketching Phase had support from the whole team and generated a variety of Design Concepts to choose from. The main ones were inspired by the “Leaper/ Animal’ aspect of the brand, which resulted in ‘Aeronautical’ and ‘Split Wing’ designs, and the second one was ‘Streamline inspired’, looking across the vehicle range of the brand and resulting in a D-type ‘Cab Rear’ design and the ‘Stingray Theme’.

Sketch Modelling was the most useful technique used during the Concept Phase. Autodesk Alias and especially Maya helped us generate a whole Show-reel of space ships in just couple of weeks.
With the Input from the group, the chosen theme was further developed using polygon modelling in Maya and then sent to JLR Clay-tech department for milling.

INTERIOR
While waiting for the clay to come back, we developed the Interior of the ship. This included the General Arrangement and structure of the spacecraft, sketched and then created in Alias. The design of the interior had to be modular and incorporate a deployable Bio-Lab, which could be dropped in case of a hazardous situation like an alien infection spread. It was meant to fit different purposes and included the Bridge - as the central command unit, and the garage right underneath, equipped with two Land Rover Offenders MKIII.
This was then taken further, refined and detailed with Laboratory equipment in Maya, with the help of our colleague James Barrie, CG Artist at JLR.
CLAY DEVELOPMENT
After receiving the clay, design changes were made and developed, with the help of the JLR Design Team. We experimented with a more aeronautical front fascia of the vehicle as it needed to dive in through the Planet’s Atmosphere, although it wasn’t the best design solution and at the same time we wanted to keep the Brand signature grille Identity. We were looking at enhancing the ‘Leaper’ overall feel of the shape and added volume and structure to the design.
ALIAS DEVELOPMENT
Besides using it during the concept phase, Alias was used as last phase of modelling and finalizing the Design and Graphics. The earlier-developed clay had been scanned and the Resurfacing started, first to hard-intersects and then Refining the shape and controlling the Continuity and flow of surfaces.
After this, Details were added and the design changes we developed in Maya were Applied: The ‘Stingray Design’ of the ship features a super Sleek Top part, referencing Jaguar’s DNA, and a Technical Undercarriage as a Diffuser – showcasing the Advanced Technology used in the design. Some of the Refinements included the front Infinity-Mirror Grille and the signature side ‘bonnet vents’.

The final model has been separated in different parts in order to 3D print and mill the scale model.

Sanding…. Sanding…. Again and again!
