Dissertation Visual Submissions
How has World War II affected 21st Century culture?
For my dissertation I chose the 50/50 option meaning a shortened essay with an original visual submission to compliment it. I chose to create 2 large posters that reflect my views on how we see World War II today.
With this piece called "Game on, Comrade", I have made reference to how our experiences today of WWII are limited to what is fed to us through the filters of television, film and videogaming. In light of our constant need for war themed entertainment, our view of history may become askew.
This illustration, titled "Come into the banks" is an homage to British homefront propaganda during the war. Reflecting our modern economic fears and fostering a spirit of pulling together for a greater good, the bank teller looks up to the sky at the paper plane bank notes rolling overhead. This was inspired by Phillip Zec's famous wartime piece "Women of Britain, come into the factories".
