Local Color: Boston
Wayfinding system inspired by the communicative and deconstructive elements of murals. Each neighborhood is represented with a set of materials and patterns based off the architecture and structures of the neighborhood, along with a color. Aimed at both tourists and residents (who are often like tourists once out of their own neighborhoods) alike, Local Color aims to highlight the structures and elements of the neighborhoods that people take for granted and foster a deeper appreciation for them, while helping guide through the city.

The system includes informational panels located by T stations to orientate and introduce people to the city and the system, informational kiosks, mural installations at various landmarks, and redesigned crosswalks and sidewalk graphics, along with a mobile app, website, and advertising campaign.
Logo uses the idea of a wayfinding band to lead through the city and adds dimension to the logo. The L and C also mimic the interactions with the system: person looking down at the kiosk, going around, etc. Can be adapted for other cities as well (i.e. Local Color Chicago)
MBTA signs located in and around stations introducing riders to the system and highlighting nearby landmarks and other points of interest in relation to current location.
Crosswalks designs with patterns and materials of each neighborhood, inlaid into streets; show name of street at either end.
Sidewalk graphics using neighborhood symbols and colors as stains on sidewalks. Spread along to help show which neighborhood a person is in.
Mural installations made from projecting panels using neighborhood patterns and materials. Show neighborhood name and landmark name, Scannable codes link the installations to mobile app.
Supports for the panels are colored to match each neighborhood and can be seen while walking around installation.
Informational kiosks with interface to find location and get directions to other sites. Directions can either be transmitted to phone or printed. Ground elements use neighborhood patterns and materials, detailing the name of neighborhood, where the neighborhood is in Boston, and where the kiosk is located in the neighborhood.
Kiosk interface shows current location and closest landmark, highlighting its location within the neighborhood. Borders of nearby neighborhoods and streets also shown. Users can information on the site, learn more about others nearby, and get directions either sent to phone or printed from kiosk.
Kiosk print outs show name of neighborhood where they are printed and use materials for each neighborhood as their border.
Mobile app allows user to read codes integrated onto installation murals, find current location, walk through neighborhoods to discover sites in each neighborhood, and provides photos and information on different landmarks.
Ad series for system. Uses local color in terms of language, using Boston slang and related to wayfinding. Wayfinding ribbon is used to double as a speech bubble.
