Mitos y leyendas de los cinco continentes - Volumen 4
El más reciente encargo grande que he recibido: ilustrar tres volúmenes de la colección Mitos y Leyendas de los Cinco Continentes, de Editorial Septiembre (Lima, Perú). La colección es publicada bajo el sello Yo Leo, parte del Plan Lector (iniciativa que busca fomentar la laectura entre los escolares). Por ahora sólo he hecho el cuarto volumen, me corresponde también el octavo y el décimo, de doce en total ilustrados por diferentes dibujantes.
Este trabajo fue un reto, nuevamente por el corto plazo, y también porque muchas de las aventuras narradas eran extrañas, por decirlo de una forma, y bastante difíciles de ilustrar con claridad o sentido... En general, el editor buscó las escenas más graficables, aunque hubo una, la de Shiva, que elegí yo por ser una escena clásica de la mitología hindú. Otra dificultad fue que los dibujos son a doble página, y por ello siempre iba a tener la costura de la páginas al centro; era complicado componer las imágenes sin que se viesen demasiado "partidas". Como es usual, usé Photoshop con una Wacom, con el pincel de pastel suave que me dio un acabado muy suelto.

This is my most recent assignment: illustrating three volumes of the collection Myths and Legends of the Five Continents. The collection is being released by Editorial Septiembre, under the YoLeo imprint; and it's part of the "Plan Lector", an initiative that seeks to feed the habit of reading among school children and teens. To this day I have just done this third volume, I'll be illustrating the eighth and tenth volumes too (There will be twelve volumes in total, with other artists collaborating).
The challenge here was, again, the tight deadline... but also the fact that the stories were rather strange and sometimes very hard to illustrate in a clear way. So the editor actually selected the most "drawable" scenes, although I did select the Shiva one, because it's a classic scen in the Hindu mythology. Also, since all the images were used in spreads, there was always the seam at the dead center of the drawings, so I had to compose them without making them look too "hacked in half". As usual, this was all Photshop and Wacom, with the soft pastel brush that gave quite a loose feel to the images.

Una de esas escena peculiares. Aquí intenté darle un fondo plano como de dibujo antiguo, pero luego decidí que era mejor que el resto de imágenes sí tuviesen más profundidad.

Shiva y la Danza Mortal / Shiva and the Deadly Dance
Las imágenes que yo conocía de Shiva Nataraj lo representan sereno mientras hace el baile de la destrucción, pero en esta escena en particula estaba furioso por la muerte de su esposa, así que así lo dibujé.
The images I knew of Shiva Nataraj had him dance with a very serene expression, but in this particular section of the book, he was mad over the death of his wife, so that's how I drew him.

Debido al plazo corto, usé pinceladas y trazos más sueltos. Uno tiene que resolver creativa y eficientemente los contratiempos.

Varaha vs. Hiranyaksha
Esta es la escena que más llamó la atención a la gente que la vio... Pero así es el cuento! Busqué darle una iluminación de atardecer y un tanto a contraluz, que no suele verse en ilustraciones, para darle un toque diferente.

Por suerte el dobles del medio del libro no malogró el efecto visual de esta imagen. Busqué enmarcar a los protagonistas en el espacio entre los caballos y el enemigo de la izquierda, y darles una luz más intensa.
Luckily the middle seam of the book didn't ruin the effect of this. I framed the main characters between the enemy soldir at left and the horses at right, and gave them a more intense lighting, almost like a spotlight.

As this was the last drawing (and with the deadline closing in) I decided to save time doing much broader and looser strokes. In the end they sat well with the action of the scene.
