The following are a series of self portraits created by Ian Sternthal that will be featured in Sternthal Book's upcoming publication of 'The Huleh Project.' The photographs are based on images of Marianne, a fictional woman first painted by Gustave Morean, who later became the figurative personification of the new French Republic. Ms. Israel is an allegorical representation of the state of Israel.

'The Huleh Project' is a political picture book that pairs disparate images from Israeli visual culture in order to yield a new understanding of Zionism; one that privileges re-invention over ethnic nationalist concern. The book is made up of two parallel texts - one visual, and one textual — that re-tell the Zionist saga through images, focusing specifically on the Lake Huleh draining project and its varying representations in Israeli visual culture.

The Shoot was styled with Melanie Willey, Hair and make up was done by Tomoyuki Tamura, photographed by David Field.
