RD Surfboards is Los Angeles based surfboard shop and production.
I started my collaboration with them by updating their overall branding and the logo, that is used on both surfboards and their merchandise. The owner of this shop is a wonderful guy with a distinct hairstyle, so one of the options include his hairdo. The final logo ended having more "classic" surfing elements: good waves and a board.
I also had a chance to create custom illustration on a couple of boards
for RD Surfboards. I used a variety of materials like acrylic paint, Posca
markers, and even Sharpies. Each board took me around 7-9 hours to
finish. For the colorful board below I sketched parts of the illustration beforehand to speed up the process.
Due to the porous surface of the unfinished board, I had to apply 2-3 layers
of paint to get the desired vibrancy. After I finished the illustration, the board was covered with the transparent layer of epoxy that changed the colors
a bit, making them a bit darker.
