The theme of unrequited love has inspired many authors across centuries. The story of star crossed lovers in literature is an infinite loop of tragedy.

The Highway Man is a classic tragic story of forbidden love between implausible lovers with all the formulaic elements of jealousy, betrayal and ultimately, loss.

Set in 18th century England, it tells the story of a beautiful maiden named Bess, the daughter of a landlord who is in love with the highway man. They are betrayed to the authorities by Tim, the stableman who desires Bess for himself and wishes the highwayman dead. The King George’s men come to the old inn at night, tying Bess up and propping her at the window in a bid to lure the highway man in and capture him.Bess sacrifices her life to warn him and he escapes. However upon hearing abouther death, he attempts to avenge his loss and is shot dead in the process making her sacrifice in vain.
