Gargoyle Typeface

Typography

Gargoyle is a gothic typeface which was my first attempt at designing font. In 2015 this project has been part of a typography course at the University of Hannover. This Font is inspired by the former power plant — a neoclassical building — which is located at the East Rail Station in Berlin.

Once a powerhouse from 1953 up to 1998, today the home of the techno club Berghain. For its visitors and guests well known as »Church of Techno«. Gargoyles have been guarding churches for thousands of years. So does this Typeface do. It guards the church.

The font is based on a square grid, which is derived from the windows of Berghain. The frames are drawn very long and divided by rungs. Every letter was drawn by hand on paper.
