Vision Health Month: The Silent Thief of Sight

Vision Health Month: The Silent Thief of Sight
Student Work

Started in 2014, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind’s Vision Health Month initiative aims to educate and bring awareness to eye diseases and the perils of vision loss throughout the month of May.

Developed as a 4th Year Major Project at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, this integrated marketing campaign concept personifies the eye disease glaucoma and encourages Canadians to get regular eye exams to ward off vision loss through early detection.

Optometrists call glaucoma the “Silent Thief of Sight” because a loss of vision caused by the disease can occur with little notice until irreparable damage has already occurred. Affecting both young and old, its effects and its nickname are synonymous with fear of personal invasion and theft; an ideal representation of losing one's sight.

The use of illustrations allows for a surreal look at the threat of vision loss caused by an eye disease like glaucoma. These illustrations depicting and eliciting an emotional response to vision loss is used in a wide variety of print and digital media.
