After reading books such as, Type: A visual history of typefaces and graphic styles (Taschen 2009) and The little book of typographic ornament (Jury, 2015), I became inspired by typographic ornamentation and so began experimenting with a combination of Caslon type and ornamental borders. My designs began to look very delicate and purely typographic with a slight use of colour for each of the four seasons.

 

My concept is based on modern day phrases that we all use today, which were created by Shakespeare himself and used throughout his plays over 400 years ago. I have chosen twelve of Shakespeare's phrases from various plays, which relate to each month in various ways, such as "Wear my heart upon my sleeve." Othello, 1603 is used in February for Valentine's Day and "For goodness sake." Henry VIII, 1613 is used in June because The Globe Theatre caught fire in June, 1613 during a production of Henry VIII.
