When I moved to Rhode Island from Los Angeles where I was born and raised, I was fascinated with all of the history and notoriety Rhode Island possesses. Rhode Island has a rich history of doing things first and being on the vanguard of big ideas such as religion, industry and design.
DESIGNXRI is an initiative working to connect the vast design talent in Rhode Island, harness and join resources, and elevate awareness of the design community on a global scale. For such a small state, Rhode Island is bursting with talented designers who live, work, learn and teach here and DESIGNXRI is dedicated to further cementing Rhode Island as the epicenter for design worldwide. This concept drove my process and the visual language expressed in my design of DESIGNWEEKRI’s schedule of events. The schedule is relayed through a flip book in which seismic waves are animated. As the reader flips through the pages, concentric circles are activated from the epicenter out, to portray the influence such a small place as Rhode Island has on the rest of the world. If the reader flips it the other way, the animation depicts a wave coming from the outside in. This can represent all of the designers, sponsors, business owners, entrepreneurs, students and general public from all over, converging on Rhode Island during DESIGNWEEKRI.
