Firefly—Conceptual Photo Series

T H E   S T O R Y

Firefly is a series of photographs taken in July 2015 during a brief trip to Boston. I met up with my friend Emma (who is also a photographer) for a few hours to do a photoshoot with her. At first, I didn't know what to do with the photos I took because I'm not the best at editing normal portraiture; however, I am good at conceptual edits, so I decided to go that route. I ended up being very pleased with the way the photos turned out, especially for not knowing what to do with them in the beginning. The photos ended up telling a sort of visual story, which is one of my favorite things to do with my photo series.

My process was as follows: I expanded three of the four photos in the series using additional photographs from the shoot, then added firefly-esque lights to each of them with the gradient tool and layer blending modes. The final step was to put the photos through the VSCOcam iPhone app to edit the colors exactly the way I wanted them. All of this took around nine hours total. Below, you will find visuals of my process for this series, along with the finished products.
