Set of Postcards for "Sacrifices" by Richard Jones

Renewal is the central theme of the poem Sacrifices by Richard Jones. For this project, myself and three other collaborators worked together to create a set of postcards that communicated the same sentiments Jones was relaying in Sacrifices: old giving way to new, death becoming life. Sacrifices starts out with Jones cleaning out his woodstove on the first day of Spring. He’s collecting charred oak logs, burnt rejected poems, tear stained ellegies, diary entries, etc. All of the things that got him through the winter, he is now giving back to the land. Back to the land so that they may be renewed and help him get through future winters. Eleven key words from the poem that represent the death and despair within, were pulled from the work to act as windows for the imagery on the cards. These words were laser cut from paper to allow a colorful underlaying floral photograph to show in its void. This represents death giving way to life. Finally the set of postcards is bundled by a band made of paper impregnated with flower seeds. Instead of discarding this band, the paper can be planted in the garden and lively wild flowers will sprout in its place.
