Brief
Your task is to explore and celebrate craft and all that could entail.

Concept and solution
I chose to explore and celebrate the craft of diamond setting, an important part of the jewellery making process. I visited a diamond setter based in Hatton Garden, a popular area for jewellery making and selling, and I photographed a day in his life. I focused on the diamond setting process of a piece of jewellery being worked on and the specific tools required for the crafting.

I designed a book based around a quote from an interview with the diamond setter -

“Every piece of jewellery has its own, personal story of craftmanship that gave it its beauty and perfection.”

The book conveys a beautiful piece of jewellery in which I have placed inside a jewellery box, used shimmering card for its cover and omnichromed in silver. Its content showcases its personal ‘story of craftmanship’, the process it took from start to finish to produce its ‘beauty and perfection’. Throughout the process, the tools required have been explained and illustrated to indicate which tool within the photograph it is in relation to. This was printed onto translucent paper which has a sparkling effect in the light, emphasising the concept of the book conveying a beautifully, diamond set piece of jewellery.
