BIGA | CHALK MENUS AND MURAL
Biga is an Italian-influenced restaurant in downtown San Diego that was established in late 2015. Named after a traditional fermentation process used for Italian dough, Biga's mission is to create all authentic Italian cuisine. Handcrafted pizza is their known specialty. However Biga has a diverse menu of high quality, local foods all at an affordable price.
I was given the opportunity to design nine menus on custom-made chalkboards for Biga. Each menu design was first lightly outlined with an erasable chalk stick. Then, the final design was hand lettered with three different colored chalk pens: white, green and gold. The typefaces and colors used in each board were specifically chosen to emphasize Biga's authentic Italian atmosphere.
I also designed and painted an 11' x 8' pig mural on Biga's interior wall. Different pig anatomy parts were hand lettered in Italian onto the pig silhouette. This calligraphy shows which pig parts Biga uses in a number of their main dishes. Biga's tagline 'Cucinato a Legno' or 'Wood Fired' was added at the bottom to further emphasize Biga's unique brand.
