Walnut and Steel

The intrinsic attributes of a hand plane that resonate the most are
heritage, cadence, and hone. Sharpening ones craft and technical
skill with the plane, as well as the literal sharpening of the blade are
visualized through the taper on the walnut shaft and the steel. A
modulation of rhythm referencing the cadence of work and the tempo
of strokes as one planes a board can be witnessed by the crescendo
of indentations and tension of negative space between wood and
steel. The piece is unified through the connection to its past. Its history
is not only referenced by the material attributes and finish but also the
spiraling steel around the steady walnut. The distance between the
steel and the wood tells how as time moves forward, we choose to
connect and disassociate parts of our past from ourselves.
