A recipe for a simple omelette

Project for BA Graphic Design at Ravensbourne

For this brief, I had to design a recipe that used no text (excluding the title and key) and make a set of consitent pictograms to follow the recipe.

My recipe was how to make a simple omelette. An omelette is very cheap, quick & flexible and I wanted to use these characteristics in my design decisions. I began my research by looking at brands such as Tesco, Sainsburys and other supermarket packaging for their own ingredients which really pushed my design thinking. I didn't want to overcomplicate the design with illustrations so I approached my design by setting myself boundaries, so I dont make the pictograms too detailed. I set up a few variations of the rounded rectangle shape and then made my ingreidents and utensils by only using the shapes I made.

The final outcome was a printed piece, slightly smaller than A2. I wanted something durable in the kitchen & when making the recipe. For this, I printed on transparent paper (for the type and actions) so if it got dirty during the recipe it could be wiped down. I also printed onto semi gloss paper stock for the pictograms because the colours worked best on this paper; this can also be used as the base for this piece. The two pieces are held together by slotting into each end of the paper which can be seen in the photographs below. The piece is targetted towards an audience of teenagers who may have moved out for university and their budget is tight or if you are in a rush in the morning and want to make something quickly.
