The Alienist
Title Sequence
The Alienist is a film based on the novel of the same name by Caleb Carr. A serial killer is hunting working-class children in late 19th Century New York City. The crimes he commits against these children are unthinkable, yet the authorities and papers choose to largely ignore the darkness that has entered their city. It is up to a brilliant alienist (psychiatrist) and a team of his own making to find the killer before darkness fully overcomes the city.
The main elements of this piece are inspired by Rorschach and his test - simplified to butterflies and ink. Fragility and stinging darkness. The distinct separation of class and the blurred lines of reality created by such a separation led to the usage of photographs from the time period - distorted and corrupted.
