A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
Book Cover design and inside illustrations
Programs used: InDesign and Photoshop
In response to A Clockwork Orange, I have experimented with the Nadsat language, a language that Burgess created which uses Russian words, influenced by the fear in the 1960’s of Russian communism subliminally penetrating the minds of capitalist youths. My imagery reflects the way you gradually begin to understand the secret language and in turn the mind of the main character Alex as the story progresses. Also, the Russian influences on the Nadsat language through imagery inspired by Russian constructivism. My imagery also explores the themes of duality, forced good vs chosen evil and utopia vs dystopia. I decided to do this through imagery of the cottage in the book called “HOME”, which is at first a place for Alex and his gang to commit violence, but later becomes a place of solace for him.
