Date:Jan 24, 2016
ProjectTitle: Magazine Layout Design for David Bowie

1.      Description:
designed two different pages fordifferent magazines, one is mainly for music magazines like rolling stones, targeting music fans
2.      Targeted Audience:
a. These two pages are designed fordifferent readerships. One is mainly for music magazines like rolling stones, targeting music fans. By using black and white color tone to convey the sadnessand nostalgic feeling.
b. Another one is for a magazine in a morewide-ranging level, like TIMES or People. I think my focus is on how to conveythe information my readers want to know in an efficient way.
3.     Research:How did you go about researching the information?
First of all, I don't know DavidBowie very well. Therefore, I watched many his live music shows and talked alittle bit with my friends who love David to have a better understanding aboutDavid.
4.     Strategy:What path did you take to come up with this idea?
At the very beginning of thisprocess, I think about my audiences and I think about my experiences as areader. What I would like to see and what kind of emotions do I have during thereading process. Then I start to sketch. I do feel like I have to drawsomething to evoke my ideas.
5.      What challenges you face in completingthis project?
I think it would be the software. I didn't have much experience as a business studentbefore. It is a little bit hard to make what is in my mind happened in thesoftware. But I really enjoyed the learning process.
6.      How did you overcome these challenges?
I emailed Florence, she is superfriendly and helpful. Very appreciate her help. And I watched videos on Lyndaand YouTube.
7.      Effectiveness:
I think the designs can talk to my audiences, however, there are some points or proportionare a little bit strange to my eyes. I cannot tell where.
8.      What alternators did you consider earlyon?
I did some rough trials early as followed:
9.      Why did you choose a particular typefaceor colors for this project?
Forthe first design, I made the whole page all black and let the photo and titlestand out. I think that part of the design is strong. And I choose a verysimple picture only with David’s silhouette. I do believe that the simple shapespeaks a lot, fully filled with David’s dramatic and tense expression on stage.

10.  Compared to the last project worked on,what was something new you try this time?
I think I tried more different layouts and I do start to think about how the integrateall the factors together organically rather than just put what I have on onepage.

11.  What ideas or things did you use for inspiration?
DefinitelyDavid Bowie’s live shows, I would like to say. The performances are verytouching and exciting. Because I don't know David very well before and I knowhe is so inspiring and respectable to a countless amount of people. I believe Ihave to have the feeling by my own in order to make something for him.

12.  What did you learn from doing thisproject?
Onething I really want to pinot out is that as a visual designer, I need to havethe special “lens” to see the world around me. What kind of color, what kind oflayout tells what kind of emotions. And I need to stand on readers’ foot to seethe content and the design, which is also true from IMC perspective. Always becustomers/audiences centralized. Talk with them rather than talk to them.
