ALL WILL BE EXPLAINED

The latest work by Dutch artist JarikJongman consists of a series of work in oil paint, on paper and on photographicprints.
The works depict different waitingrooms, both empty and occupied.

Waiting is something we all do.Almost inevitably, we wait with a purpose. We wait for change, for positivethings to happen. We wait beforetravelling, on holiday, or to work. At the doctor’s or in the hospital we waitto be cured of illness, to be made whole again.
It is a promise that lies in waiting:a reward at the end. Your turn has come, the end of the line, the Kingdom ofHeaven perhaps; redemption and eternal life.

Life is uncertain, unpredictable. Forthis reason, the act of waiting can be quite pleasant. A waiting room is a roomwhere time or life, seem suspended. We are temporarily put in a situation wherewe cannot act. And we do not have to. It is not expected of us. It offers amoment for contemplation, with responsibility temporarily lifted.

We like to think that we make choicesin life, decisions made by our free will. But perhaps our sense of control isan illusion. What if waiting is in fact all we are capable of?

Ultimately there is the fear, therealisation even, that everything is pointless, that all is in vain. Perhaps, then, we should find thereward in the anticipation.

“Let us make the most of it, before it is toolate! Let us represent worthily for once the foul brood to which a cruel fateconsigned us!”
(S. Beckett, Waiting for Godot)
