Kaleidoscope Life
A class I am currently enrolled in at UW titled, Pattern in the Environment, was commissioned to created artwork for an area company named Life Technologies. This company is a leader in stem cell research, we toured the facilities and were asked to create artwork inspired by their research. I designed a series of two patterns entitled Kaleidoscope Life. I was inspired by stem cells ability to replicate indefinitely, and their ability to become almost anything. I took images of cell-like structures found in nature- mainly in ice and rocks, and created motifs that were reminiscent of mandalas. Mandalas are religious symbols that signify the universe, they look similar to many stained glass windows you see in churches. These associations brought up questions of the dissonance between religion and stem cell research.
