Porto Summer of Code 2015

Porto Summer of Code 2015
7–13 September 2015

Porto Summer of Code is a programming competition for students in the city of Porto, Portugal.
On its 2nd edition, Porto Summer of Code occupied a whole floor in Axa Building, located in the emblematic Aliados Avenue. Students from 4 regions of Portugal developed software projects around the subject "Digital life".

With a new partnership with the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP), I joined the project to work on the event's identity and branding for the 2015 edition.
In collaboration with Pedro Cardoso, designer and teacher at FBAUP, we updated the logo and developed all the materials needed for the conference, such as posters, flyers, credentials and lanyards, t-shirts, signage, and collaborated with the organization on the look and feel of the venue.
Echoing the logo design, the look of the event centered on sliced iconic city monuments and a warm color palette.
Logo
We updated the logo slightly, to make it more adaptable and readable in different contexts.

Social media
Social media was the primary channel to reach out to the public, so it was imperative to have an updated image.
Flyers and Posters
During the months leading up to and during the event, we designed several materials (digital and printed) to let people know about the event, call for registrations and announce the the event at the venue itself.
A6 flyer (left) and A3 poster (center) announcing the dates of the event and registration. A2 poster (right) inviting the general public to attend the final presentations.
Credentials and Lanyards
We designed different lanyards for different groups of attendees, so they would be easily distinguished from a distance.
Members of the organization had all yellow IDs paired with a black lanyard, participants had white IDs and lanyards, and everyone else (mentors, jury, sponsors, volunteers) had an ID with a gradient, paired with a yellow lanyard.
Credentials for the organization, mentors, jury, general (volunteers, sponsors,...) and participants.
T-shirts
The goal was to design t-shirts that were appealing and that people looked forward to wearing even after the event was over.
We made two designs: one in black with a yellow logo on the front, and another in white and yellow, with a sliced graphic of Porto's most recognizable bridge on the front, and a small logo on the back.
Venue and Signage
The venue was managed by the city council, and had previously hosted an art fair, during which many artists had painted the walls, many of which can be seen on the photos below.
We thought that actually spoke a lot of the essence and history of the space, and saw no need to cover everything up. However, we still wanted to make sure that when someone walked in it was very clear this was the Porto Summer of Code venue.
So we decided to tie the venue with a lot of yellow paint on the walls and columns, a stenciled logo and the event's hashtag at the entrance.
We developed some signage for different spaces of the venue, consisting of white icons, sliced, on a black background.
